Final review, first posted on Fantasy Literature: Spindles End is long and leisurely-paced, but I found it an absorbing retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, with fascinating details and appealing animals (Robin McKinley excels at both of those things) and a few major twists to the classic story.

So I’ll start with Spindle’s End. I picked up this book after reading Beauty earlier this year. I really enjoyed Beauty, and I loved the way McKinley retold the fairy-tale.
So, I decided to give Spindle’s End a go. Spindle's End is the first book I've read by Robin McKinley since Deerskin. I prefer it to Deerskin, but I also prefer The Blue Sword to Spindle's End. Like Deerskin, Spindle's End is the retelling of a fairy tale.
